Why does it seem like EVERYONE numbs themselves in some way?

Some do so through drinking, doing drugs, overeating, starving themselves, smoking, etc.

What other ways do people numb themselves?

And what makes one person choose drinking, and another choose overeating?

Please and thank you for your opinions =]

Many facits to your Q. I think that different eras in which a child grows up in, can help determine their reactions. In my case, The Great Depression hit when I was born and people were really scared. Food was scarce, but could be grown in the back yards; jobs were even more scarce! Years later, in college, I obtained an old government Farm Bureau tract put out for mothers during the '30's urging them not to pick up babies when they cried--that that spoils them and interrupts the mother's work! My father got a job at night and had to sleep in the days. As a toddler, when I created a fuss--angry, crying etc., I was locked in the bathroom and couldn't come out until I was quiet AND had a smile on. Mothers were urged to put the baby on a rigid feeding schedule and force them to adapt. I grew up not even realizing that I WAS hungry as that natural response to needing food was not reinforced. As an adult, I realized that when I was hungry, instead of eating, I'd get a beer or later a heavier drink! This I later learned in therapy was to numb the hunger pangs, as food was not known on a gut-level to resolve them--just alcohol. Also to numb my anxiety set up by trying something new, as exploration was very much discouraged. Over-eating would be the same similiar reaction to scarce food; or perhaps mothers stuffing their children and giving them love and praise for over eating. Over eating for girls can often be to make themselves "unattractive"--to disguise their sexuality. Lots of factors in each individual family system!! Any excess in life can be a reaction to childhood trauma/stresses.

how do you know that the "holy spirit" that you're feeling isn't really just normal human emotion? While a Christian can have an "inward confirmation" that they are actually hearing from God, in many instances a Christian may just be guessing and hoping that it is actually God speaking to them. The Lord Jesus said that His sheep hear His voice and on a few occasions over the years I've been certain that God was speaking to me but those instances don't happen every day or even every month or more. " Might that feeling of "having the holy spirit" be simply the euphoria you get when you believe something good about yourself?" I guess. I can't speak for anyone else but when I sense the Spirit I don't feel all good about "myself" instead it's usually me thinking something like "OK Lord, I don't really feel like doing this, but according to your Word this is the Christian thing to do so I'll do it"... ...Now that doesn't mean that during a worship service or something a Christian can't "sense" the presence of the Spirit in the worship, but there is no way to "prove" that it's not their imagination... And moreover, how can you rely on internal feelings of emotion to prove something objective about reality (e.g. that God exists)? You can't. All you can do is examine evidence against reasonable standards and come to objective conclusions or hypotheses, etc about what is true. Subjective reasoning never leads to absolute truths because of the definition of how that type of "reasoning" works.

I numb my emotions, and i only tell a one person what really bothers me.

My parents, bestfriend and everyone else thinks i'm fine.
Ever Since i quit my skating, everything changed, and i guess it made me relize all these other things that were wrong with me. And i have issues now, but i hide it all, i dont know why i do, i just do. It confuses me.

Well alcohol and some drugs are mood elevators. So I'd imagine they do it because it feels good.

I think its whatever comforts them. Some people choose not to confront their feelings and run away from them, because its too painful to think about.
