Depends on how mature and responsible they are. Like with school, chores, respectful nature, real actions, etc.
If I were to allow mine to have a cell it would be one that would be limited to emergency, calling home, up to maybe five friends phone numbers. That is if I could get a cell company to do that. Plus, I would want a cap on it as to how many minutes they'd be allowed to use. Cause even the most responsible young person has friends and have tendencies to allow their friends usage of their items.
The parent should know their child well enough to make that decision, but, me....probably not if not under my terms.

I say no. As a teacher that student is one that text messages everytime he gets a chance. I have little tolerance for parents who give their children cell phones, knowing they will bring them to school, knowing that they will leave them turned on even though they should be turned off and then the parent will text or call and leave the child a message. so NO, a child can not handle that type of responsibility.

No, I don't. I've seen 8 year olds with cell phones, and it's ridiculous. Children that young don't need cell phones, and if there was a situation in which they did need one, their parents should have one that they could borrow for only that situation.

I think kids should get a cell phone, especially when an emergency occurs. Did you know that there are cell phones made specifically for kids!

My grandson has one and he's 9. But, it's a phone, that has #'s 1 thru 4. 1. mom 2. dad 3. gramma (me) and 4. 911. He can't make any calls on it except for what's programed into it, and it's turned off during school hours. It's come in very handy.

♥Well. It depends on how you look at it. If they are responsible then yes. They could use it for emergencies. If they only used it to say they had a cell phone then I say no. They should not. But when I was around the age of 10 I had one but I used it for emergencies. I had to use it for babysitting too. ♥

I have mixed feelings on this issue....
1. They come in handy when the child is away from home!
13 or 14 doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
2.They tend to use minutes like candy when they are not free!!

No. I think a child should have a cell phone when he/she has their own money to pay for it.

Yes. Everyone these days has a cellphone when they're 13. Besides, when they go to high school they'll need to use it anyways. It comes in handy. (unless they're text messaging during class like a lot of people do)

I think its okay,
if it's one of the cell phones that
only the numbers programmed in it can call
it and the child can only call those numbers..
