Because some people are so concerned with their label in life they have to label others so they feel better. But I remember watching the show "The Nanny" one time when the older daughter didn't want to go out with a "geek" and the nanny told her, football star, pulled groin, pumping gas because he couldn't do anything else since he took a free ride on his popularity, then pocket protector, AV club debate club - Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg and millions of dollars with a happy home life. Sometimes people are just big jerks because they are stupid, but I really believe everyone gets their day (it's just the jerks refuse to believe it could actually happen to them).

They do it as a means to feel better about themself. E.g. "At least I'm not a geek." They ignore the fact that it is perfectly okay to have what they would call geek-ish tendencies, and that such people are in fact often quite happy.

Most likely jealousy. It would be terrible if everyone was of a particular brand, make, model number.

I think the "superior attitude" is a juvenile way of making one-self fell better about one-self. Kinda like saying you 'In with the In-crowd." OK, so it was a silly song from the early 60's but supports my view.

I only use the word geek to describe someone with more electronic/computer/digital saavy than myself. It's a compliment when I use it.

No, because it threatens their self-security when others are not "sheep" like THEY are.

I'd rather be a geek than one of the milling herd!

That's stupid. If they do, they are morons. Fake people with no real personality. Geeks are coo ltoo anyway. WAYYYY more interesting than someone who only talks about themselves and hollister....******* annoying.
