I presume you mean important as in its use by civilized man, rather than important as in the conduction of nerve impulses responsible for thought, feelings, and muscle activation. The latter of course has been going on since man has existed.

I found a site that has a compact history of the use of electricity. I agree with the author that the first important use was the telegraph in about 1840, followed very quickly thereafter by the telephone, electric lighting, electric motors, and so on.

Electricity has always been important. It hasn't always been controllable, but it has always been important. Even before history, for example, it was always important to avoid lightning. VERY important.
