I am not sure about increasing the amount of brain power we use, but there are lots of studies that talk about keeping your cognitive abilities intact as you get older. Some of the activities that are recommended are simple things like:
crossword puzzles
word searches
balancing checkbook (without a calculator)
reading
I have also heard discussion recently about increasing neural connections by doing things with your non dominant hand. So, for example, if you are right handed, try to do things with your left hand that you would normally do with your right.

Yes, you can increase the use of your brain. It's long been proven, and more and more studies continue to prove to this day, that people who think more throughout their lives actually increase their brain power and are less likely to become senile in old age. Puzzle books are an easy way to do this!

For a normal person, only 5-8% of the brain is in use at any one time.
However, increased brain activity doesn't necessarily translate to being smarter or faster at thinking; high brain activity is associated with attention deficit disorder and people who have had brain damage.
More neurons firing, but creating confusion instead of synergy.
It may be better to figure out how to make your brain work more efficiently than to figure out how to make it simply work more.

I believe generation X uses more brain power then the generation proceeding them, and there's also reason to believe that generation Next will be using even more of their brain capacity. Kind of off the subject... but the Celestine Prophecy is a REALLY good book.

There is no way you can increase it. It looks like it has been designed to increase by it self by human development over the years. So maybe after hundreds of years, the human brain will get just a little bit stronger and more developed. That's what I think. :)

it is NOT true that we use a minimal amount of our brains. that was a wrong notion that got spread in popular culture. We use all of it. To stimulate the brain, read, study, think, exercise, dance, talk with people, pray, daydream... There are plenty of things you can to to maximize brain activity.

It's been shown that the more you use your brain the more active it remains.
Example the elderly that continue to make sure they are challenged mentally retain more mental function than those who simply don't bother.
I believe the brain is like a muscle the more you use it the stronger it gets.

Dont use drugs such a marijuana (and based on E.B.'s answer stated above, dont use drink beer either...)
anywhoo, drugs kill brain cells. If you do mental gymnastics, listen to talk radio, play challenging crossword puzzles etc, it will give your mind a mental workout. The more you use it the stronger it becomes...think of the great lawyers you know (or have heard of...) they BECOME great because of the practice...use it or lose it! GOOD LUCK!

Like the dark skinned chick said, using more brain activity only creates more confusion - that's why I drink alcohol, it kills off only the unnecessary brain cells.
