None of us can likely give the perfect guess as it is unlikely most of us have visited every arena. I have had the pleasure of visiting a few barns and Detroit and Montreal are the loudest of them. They also have a larger % of knowledgable fans (i.e., know when to get loud, when not to...recognize great plays even when the casual fan doesnt realize how good the simple looking play was, etc.). Sitting in the old Montreal Forum sent chills down my spine just thinking of the history, hard to describe the feeling. It is no longer the case but the old Chicago stadium when the Hawks were good was an incredible place to see a game (the monster sized organ was killer good). They got it going from the National Anthem (Wayne Messmer before getting shot was the best anthem person I've ever seen....and I hate the Hawks!) all the way to the parking lot after games. Have not had the pleasure of catching a game in NY (yet) so cant rate them but look forward to my chance. The worst barns as fans go that I have seen....Nashville (many seem clueless and there is little energy when i visited....but to be fair it was a Feb. game) and TB and Florida both could use some fans with more energy (Tampa seems to have more northern fans so I noticed more knowledgable fans than expected). But my top 3 easily are Detroit (my team), Montreal (great fans, awesome setting) and the old Chicago stadium (the new barn pretty much sucks, no energy and no character).

I've been in both buildings this season, and Montreal's is louder. Now. I was at a Devils-Rangers game at the Garden in 1992 and I couldn't hear the National Anthem. I was at a Devils-Rangers game in December of this season and it was totally different. I guess the Rangers fans hadn't had the chance to get liquored up yet. Or maybe that one Stanley Cup really HAS satisfied them for a lifetime. (It better, 'cause there won't be a second.) A "crowd" of 15,000 at the Meadowlands, where the sound doesn't carry well (as good a reason as any to build a new arena), sounded louder this year than a sellout of 18,200 at the Garden.
Considering how bad their team was this season -- worst in the NHL and worst in their 40-year history -- I'm amazed at how loud the This Year's Bank Name Center in Philly was. Now THOSE are hockey fans. Evil, but hockey fans.

St. Pete Times Forum home of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The noise was so loud during the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs that the players couldn't hear the horn as some of the games finished. Now that's loud.

Detroit. Its hockey town itself. It's a mad house, heck noise isnt even enough there. Things get messy, no other hockey town has the balls to throw an octupus on the ice game after game. I still believe Canada has to be given every ounce of credit with it though. Not having been to any of the Canadien rinks its hard to say but I agree Montreal would be my guess!

The Saddledome in Calgary during the playoffs....voted the second toughest place to play by the players (after Detroit) and during the opening, the place is so loud that the locker rooms actually shake (according to the opposition).
Plus....everyone is wearing red. Very intimidating, and better then some 'freebie' gimmick like the towels (the Winnipeg Jets did it first, and now everyone copies them).

i have never been to any other arena but hp pavillion is amazing. people think that because we're in california nobody cares about hockey. i live in the central valley, two hours from the bay area, and i see people all the time with sharks jerseys. with that kinda support all over northern california and with so many sellouts its no wonder sharks fans are the best in the business

I've never been outside of Nationwide Arena (CBJ's) but a game I went to when Buffalo played at Columbus... those fans were just as loud as our home team. They had bus load of fans attend that game. It was amazing to see how devoted Buffalo fans were and how they weren't afraid to be loud and obnoxious.
