In the movies, it's always been straight couples; boy asks girl out; girl changes from dorky/geeky/generally 'unattractive' in the media's eyes to princess at the end.

I never went to prom at high school (There wasn't one in the end) but I am curious.

I live in the UK and we don’t have proms. Judging by the amount of American homophobes on this site, I would say that not many gays would want to go to a prom with another guy.

Unfortunately not alot of schools currently allow male/male or female/female coupling at proms because they don't want to cause a scene or make it an issue. I know that any city that usually has a gay and lesbian youth center hold proms as well for those who could not attend theirs. But look at it this way, when our parents went to school they did not allow the black boys/girls to take a white boy/girl to the prom and now it is a non issue, this soon will pass as well as long as we can educate the ignorance factor in the good ole USA that everyone has equal rights male/female, gay/straight and old/young should be held up to the same standard as everyone else.. If you are thinking of going to your prom and your school doesn't allow it I suggest taking a best friend and having a good time, don't miss out on prom. If your significant other goes to the same school have them do the same.. that way you can go to prom together and no one can stop you...

Certainly! Even though many gay couples choose not to go to prom, or at least not to go together, because of the hassles they may get. But yes, lots actually do.

Some couples even have to fight hard to get it; try renting the movie "Prom Queen: The Marc Hall Story", about a gay couple in a Catholic high school who went to court for the right to go to prom together.

Hope that helps!

It seems to me that things are changing...for the better! I graduated high school 15 years ago (YIKES!) and a very good friend of mine took her girlfriend from another school to our prom. It was very scandalous for back then (especially in Arkansas!) However, no one gave them any grief, and everyone was very nice and respected their wishes to be a couple. I was very proud of my school that night! I was not out then, but when I went to my 10 year reunion 5 years ago, I took my partner, and people could not have been nicer. He and I both were prepared for the worst, but it turned out to be one of the best times we have ever had together. Once again...very proud of my school and my former classmates!!! If a student really wants to take their boyfriend or girlfriend, I think it would be very mature for them to go to the sponsor, counselor...whoever, and get the input form an adult. They might not like what the adult has to say, but as a VERY conscious gay man, I think that we should respect the rights of others, and how our lifestyle affects other people. Now please don't get on your soapboxes...I think that irresponsible behavior goes for everyone! Staright people, gay people...whomever. We should all try and examine things from every angle and weigh pros and cons before doing anything...

I think it's happening more and more. Especially since more school districts are adopting a non-discrimination policy which allows for it.

Unfortunately, there is still alot of mainstream stereotyping that surrounds prom. "Enchanting", "Beautiful", "Memorable". IMHO prom has outlived it's usefulness. The entire reason the practice even got started is because women were expected to wed at a young age. Prom served as a societal justification for that.

I myself have been to a school prom with a friend of mine I am gay and he is gay and we had a great time... like alot of the answers before me have said alot of times schools will protest gay couples saying that its against the rules or that it will not be tolerated and in certain cities (I live in NYC) have gay proms for those who dont feel comfortable bringing their partners to their school we have gay proms... I personally have only been to traditional school proms but i have heard that gay proms are alot of fun... so its all good

a lesbian couple went together to my senior prom. which took a lot of guts. i'm from a small town and EVERYONE freaked out; school administrators didn't want to let them go together, parents were upset, other students were stupid about it and thought it was "gross" (an expression i heard lots that night, and ironically not about the straight couple groping on the dance floor). but the girls took a stand and went together. very cool.

I dont think it is advisable to go as a couple. They can go together though but they dont dance together. Remember, not everyone at the proms accept this kind of relationship and you on the other hand dont want to go to a prom to be made fun of. You may end up losing all your school friends if they found out the real you and not accept it.
