Many of my profs in college posted outlines online prior to the class. If they do, you can print it out & bring to class to jot notes around the main ideas.

Also, it might help to read the material (from your textbook) before class so that you have a greater comprehension of what the teachers are discussing. It makes it easier to remember the material later if you know what the heck they are talking about! :)

Lastly, I had a lot of teachers in h.s. that tried scaring us by telling us "You better pay attention and write quickly, bc once you are in college, teachers won't stop and repeat what they say". Actually, a lot of profs in college understand that you are taking notes and they WILL stop and repeat important ideas. Just pay attention to their verbal cues.

And don't be one of those nerds with a recorder. You will never actually have time to replay the entire class conversation. :)

Good luck!!

Don't get caught up in trying to write every word they say down. Listen to them and understand what they are saying, and at the same time make sure to write down the key points, and special notes that the professor may hint at being on tests. Most professors have some sort of outline or powerpoint presentation on their class websites, so print that out before going to class, follow it, and make little notes as he expands on the different topics.

I used a computer, but i type really fast and can type and listen at the same time.
You might also try a tape or digital recorder then transcribe the lecture later ... or just listen and review your notes.

Don't worry about copying everthing down word for word. Just get the main ideas. It can help if you create a type of shothand-use intials for people's names, abbreviations, etc. (Just make sure you know what they mean!). If you are really worried about it you can always get a tape recorder and ask your profs if you can record the class.

Get a small tape recorder, fairly inexpensive, the ones with the mini tapes.
Write like when you text. Use abbreviations
What you miss or don't understand you can listen too on tape
