Pollution can do several things to animals--it can kill fish and bugs, cause birds beaks to be deformed, reduce egg production and animal reproduction, and
eliminate species all together. People study the "gross" effects on animals, such as deformed beaks, and thenstudy the
sublethal effects on reproduction and try to determine the long-term effects on the population by species, and by the "food chain"
groups. They also know that certain chemicals accumulate in fish, in their fat, and that humans should not eat fish from the
Great Lakes daily. There are guidance documents that show how often to eat the fish, such as trout, smelt and such.
When humans eat fish that have such chemicals in them, we can measure it in the milk that mothers produce for their babies, and some of these chemicals
are thought to be responsible for cancers and deformities or learning disabilities in babies.

Land Pollution Effects On Animals

Pollution affects animals by destroying their habitats, poisoning them, forcing them to migrate and causing disease or vulnerability. Most animals thrive in areas that have good plant growth. However, when pollution takes place, plants may begin dying off. If, for instance, an industry poorly disposes of toxic chemicals, the vegetation cover in the region may be affected. Once vegetation reduces, animals will have absolutely nothing for eating and can even begin starving.

Any animal that uses sound to call mates may be affected by noise pollution. While many animals like frogs can only even hear the specific frequency their call sounds on, sound produced by cities and other human creations can sometimes cover many frequencies and confuse organisms that can hear them. Also in water, certain types of sonic imaging used by oil companies to get an idea of the geographic layout of the ocean floor can dammage fish hearing. while it has been shown that fish can actually regrow the tiny "hairs" used to detect sound; there is still investigation into how extensive this damage is and how it may effect them ecologically. These are just a couple of examples.
