Hey Carissa,
1. Side to side in a movie, just take the same picture and crop off one side (slightly), save it as another name. In your movie software - put the pictures in the film track as many times as you want it to move back and forth. There are timing issues, and transitions you can play with too.
That same tip I used to help make a video of my wedding, when we had no video, just still pictures. My Wife coming down the aisle - trim all the edges ever so slight, then again, then again, and repeat until she is in full frame. Some cool games you can play with the center and where you want the focus to go.
2. Change your picture to all Black and White in any photo edit tool. Then play with the color brightness - see my avatar.
Adjust the brightness of an image
The Brightness control changes the amount of white in all colors and shades of gray.
--- 1 On the Standard toolbar, click Image Balance .
---2 Drag the Brightness slider to increase (100) or decrease (0) the brightness.
To adjust all colors, select All Colors in the lower-left list before dragging the slider. To adjust the color channels separately, select Red, Green, or Blue.
3 When shooting pictures, get a bigger field of view than you intend to print, then you can crop your pictures while taking your time to examine. Be sure not to overwrite the originals, save cropped images to another file name.

Which programs do you have?
A good way to figure out what how to do what you want to do is to really learn your program well. If you're unsure of where to start, I'd say Adobe Photoshop (they have a trial version, plus, you can pick up the Limited Edition for about $100). There are tonnes of photo manipulation tutorials on the Internet. Just search for the name of your software, and search for Tutorial. Even if a technique isn't quite what you're looking for, you can still learn a lot.
Also, if you want to make animated images (like those on icons), you'll need Flash or else a program that's capable of making animated GIFs (eg: Adobe ImageReady).
So, yes, find tutorials, try them out and spend lots of time pressing buttons until stuff happens!
Good luck and have fun!

well depends on what you want to use to edit the pics. If using photoshop and you want to change the hair color make a new layer on top of the pic, set the layer mode to overlay and just paint with the color you want. If you're using something other than photoshop then I really can't help.
