It was a storyline for the WWE to help promote his and their movie See No Evil and just as trigger to make Kane viscous again. In his mind Kane would hear voices taunting him about the date and the past, but so did everyone else considering it was pumped over the soundsystem. Basically it was just so fans would hopefully remember that on May 19th they should go see the movie.

As the story line for that date goes it's the date that his family died in a fire, all except for him and Undertaker. In that fire Kane was burned severly. Hence the mask he used to wear.
