Look under the hood. Usually on the radiator or radiator support bracket, there will be a pictorial of the routing.

Lots of Ford products have Belt diagrams displayed on the bodywork. Others have a diagram in the appropriate shop manual. If you don't have access to those, you should stop a friendly Escort driver and ask if you can look at his serpantine belt layout. You can also take a guess at how it should be laid out, because there is only one way that it can work. Like, for example, you have to have the camshafts and crankshaft all rotating in the same direction.

look on the underside of your hood near the latch...there should be a small square sticker with the pulley locations and belt routing,if it is ribbed, it goes grooves to grooves and the flat to flat....it will only go one one of two ways...with or without a/c. the shiny idler pulley always goes against the back of the belt. start at the crank pulley, loop it around the bottom, then find the a/c, water pump, p/s, and tensioner...work your way up until you have about an inch of slack, put 15mm breaker bar or socket on tensioner and either push or pull until you can loop it around alternator. then slowly release tension and you're done.

there is usually one on top of the radiator, but it would take an idiot to not be able to figure it out with a little thought
