Not all pirates did, very few did actually. Those who did wear patches did so because of some injury or other to their eye.

Not all of them wear eyepatches.
Sailors used eye patches to have one eye adjusted for the sunlight at the top deck and the other eye already adjusted for the darkness when suddenly going below deck. They can't just wait for their eyes to adjust so when they really need to see in almost complete darkness below deck, they have one eye ready to do whatever they need when they are tight on time.

It is assumed that some wore it to keep one eye ready for darkness. Remember, the hulls were dark spaces and if you protect one eye from bright light and enter a dark space, the eye which has been protected does not have to adjust to darknes, like the other has to. This adjustment of the eye can take up to 45 minutes.

mythbusters!...they figured it really helped to keep one eye in the dark, so that they were ready for battle at night by switching the patch over to the other eye, or if they needed to see below deck...

The eye patch was initially for those who were missing an eye...but then everyone did it cuz they thought it made them look tough.....They lied and said that they lost it in sum type of fight.....!!!

"Mythbusters" determined it may allow them to go from a bright setting to a dark setting and have one eye set for the darkness and be able to fight if necessary
