President Lincoln was a republican , who did want the united states to stay united but also did what he thought was best for the country. That being said slavery was not the biggest issue of the war..the biggest issue was money, and southern states feeling cheated out of it. remember that in the 1800's almost everything was done with boats and since most of the major ports are in the south( mississippi river) the southern ports wanted a " fee or toll" from states further up the rivers.
