That really depends on where you are and how cold it gets. If you are anywhere in the US you can build your pond with one deep spot (called a well) at least 4 feet deep and be quite sure they will be fine. If you want to be extra sure, dig your well 4.5 feet deep. Just make sure the well is big enough around to hold all of the fish at adult size and you will be just fine. That is for the coldest areas or Northern US and southern Canada. If you live further south, shallower will do just fine. From TN on down a pond of 2.5 - 3 feet is more than safe.

KOI POND
A koi pond is different from a water garden because koi limit the amount of plant life available to be grown. Simply put: koi eat some plants. A koi pond should also be larger because koi get quite large despite the size of the pond, it is recommended that a koi pond be no less than 1000 gallons in volume, the bigger the better. It also needs to have an area of the pond at least 3 feet deep, 4 - 5 may be better.

WATER GARDEN
A water garden typically contains both goldfish and a variety of aquatic plants. Water gardens in moderate climates usually need for an area of the pond to be at least 2 feet deep. Colder climates require a depth to provide at least 12" to 16" of water below the freeze zone.

You can get a koi pond heater.

Minnesota has some extreme weather conditions that call for special measures when trying to overwinter koi outdoors. This article is written with the assumption that your pond is deeper than the frost level in your area. With MN temps dipping into the -40°F range, the frost level can be 4 feet deep or more. A pond with an area 5 feet or deeper is the most reliable depth of a pond for over-wintering koi in MN. Koi ponds shallower than 4 feet can be over-wintered but the risk of death and gill damage becomes greater, and the ability to keep the pond from freezing solid becomes more difficult and expensive. If you are just starting out, do yourself a huge favor and put a deep area in your new pond!

So, how can your koi be over-wintered safely? The only 100% effective method is to bring them indoors! However, by applying the methods described below your koi survival rate outdoors will be higher and much more reliable. Read on.

Use below chart as a guide for safekeeping koi during winter:
Above 50 F degrees: 3ft deep
40-50 F degrees: 3.5 ft deep
32-40 F degrees: 4.0 ft deep
20-32 F degrees: 4.5 ft deep
0-20 F degrees: 5 ft deep

* use a pond heater to keep an area of your pond ice free so poisonous gas can escape during winter, otherwise a froze over pond can block oxygen and trap poisonous gas in and will kill your fish. some people have kept their pump running so to create moving water so their pond won't freeze, but that will shorten your pump's life.

the typical Depth would be any where from 1.5 feet to 2 feet you have to remember there are predetors like birds raccons etc i would go 2 feet just to be safe and also in the winter make sure you have water movement so the whole top of the pond doesnt freeze this will kill the fish

and anther thing i would check to see if you could put goldfish in a pond i think you can i wouldent see why not so good luck
