I was JUST playing that yesterday!! They call it Donkey Kong cuz he's cool like that. I mean Monkey Kong just sounds stupid and King Kong was already taken, so they took a vote, and they chose donkey, cuz donkeys are cool.

He is originally an antagonist, and I believe he got the "donkey" vice "monkey" to avoid lawsuits and for the obvious metaphor of him being an a$s to protagonist Mario.
