I used castor oil at 41 weeks. I took 2 ounces in a glass of OJ and in about 1 hour I started needing to use the bathroom really bad and often. My daughter was born 5 hours later. I really don't recommend it to be honest. More than 2 ounces could cause problems. My contractions were also more intense, but it did make the labor progress more quickly. Basically, I was ready to go into labor anyway, it just made things quicker. It doesn't work unless you are ready. I know plenty of women who have tried it and it didn't work. It really isn't worth it if it doesn't work.

Hey there...I used castor oil at 41.5 weeks as a last ditch effort to start labor before an induction. I mixed 2 oz with lemonade and it went down fast. Gross, but really not worse than some medicine.
I started getting contractions early the next morning after a few hours in the ladies room. My son was born the next morning without induction.
First, don't try random oils...Castor has prostaglandins in it and works by absorbing through the intestinal wall...
Second, as far as the toilet and all, I have to say that it ended up being an okay thing as many women will agree it is no fun to go into labor without having emptied yourself if you know what I mean.
Good luck.
It is different for everyone.

I was 40 weeks and facing induction because my water had been broken for too long. I took 2 oz in a glass of OJ. It was disgusting and a few hours later I had the worst violent diarhea of my life. It did kick off labor which was what I wanted, but being in labor and unable to move off the toilet at the same time was HORRIBLE. I don't think I could ever be so tired of being pregnant that I would choose it, but my other options were being induced or having a repeat cesarean (I had a c-section with my first). Of those 3 lousy options castor oil was the best choice for me. Labor was 30 hours, the first 4 on the toilet, but it did end up being successful.

girl..let me tell you first of all---your goign to have like..a million people on here tell you how stupid it is that your even asking and how bad it is for you and im sure ill get thumbs down but--im gunna be honest! haha
I USED CASTOR OIL!!! I used it twice actually. haha I am 38 weeks pregnant and 3 nights ago i took 3 TSP of it and by the time 24 hours had gone by...NOTHING happened. I didn't even have the runs like everyone claimed i would. But i wasn't in labor either. So then the next night i took about...an ounce of it. Still---nothin. not even the runs again. Buuuut..i did start having some minor contractions. unfortunetly not enough to get my labor going! So no..i didn't work for me AT ALL!! Im not sure why but..hey..i guess im glad i didn't get the runs and then just end up being on the toilet without getting a baby right? haha
I have heard stories of it working though. Some moms take as little as 1 TSP and have it work within 2 hours. I would reccomend taking 3 TSP of it and then waiting about....5 or 6 hours. If nothing happens...take 3 more. some woman take as much as like...4oz at a time so...3 TSP isn't going to harm you in any way. My mom took the 4 oz when she was pregnant with my brother and it put her into labor 2 hours later and he was born 6 hours after that!!! She was also 38 weeks along.
Good luck and it never hurts to give it a try!!! Hopefully you will get some success out of it!!! i have heard an easier way to take it is to buy little empty pill capsules and fill them with the oil then take the oil in pill form. Its VERY hard to get down any other way. I ended up taking my 1 OZ in a shot glass and then chasing it with lemonade to kill the taste! good luck!!!

DON'T DO IT!
My sister made me drink a whole bottle mixed with orange and pineapple juice when I was a couple of days overdue with my first son. All it did was make me violently ill...vomiting AND diarrhea for almost 2 days. When I finally had my son naturally 8 days later....he had pooed inside me and the doctors said that the castor oil had put him inot distress and that is why he had done this. Apparently it can make them very ill if they swallow their poo so I was very lucky he hadn't!
Apparently it is supposed to work by making your bowel spasm...and boy does it spasm!...which is supposed to stimulate your uterus into contracting. I firmly believe that the only time it seems castor oil 'works' is if you are about to go into labour anyway. Then it is all a big coincidence! And who wants to deal with diarrhea and bowel spasms when your are in labour? Labour pains are bad enough and I never want to squirt my doctor or anyone else with diarrhea when I am giving birth!!!!!
To this day, (13 years later), I can still remember the taste of the castor oil and can't wear a tropical flavour lip balm as it is EXACTLY the taste of the concoction my sister made me drink!
I say again....DON'T DO IT!!!

OK so I have a daughter thats 4 months old and i carried her for 38wks and 2 days. I was so ready to have her and everyone was saying to drink castor oil and it would bring on labor. I really didn't believe it but i had my husband go and buy some from the local pharmacy. Directions say take 1tbsp and so i did. I took it on a thursday. It is thick like syrup but it has no real taste to it. It kind of tastes like you would think glue does. But neways i took it on Thursday morning and about 3 hours later it took effect and i started having to go to the bathroom. Castor oil in case you didn't know IS a laxative. So the theory is that it clears out your stomach so that the baby has room to drop and your cervix can begin to dialate more. Well all day friday i was feeling kinda crampy but i just figured they were braxton hicks. I got better and told my husband i was ready to have the baby. We went to sleep and i woke up about 12 o'clock AM with what i thought were contractions. I was in doubt so i tried to go back to sleep. I couldn't so i got up and packed my bag just in case. I couldn't go back to sleep so i woke hubby up about 5:30AM and said its time to go to the hospital. We got dressed and left. I had my precious daughter at 2:31 pm that afternoon. I do give all credit to the castor oil. It was safe for me and my baby as well as many others that i know. GOOD LUCK.

I was 40 weeks pregnant and was scheduled to be induced...so I did the old wives tell and drank castor oil....about half the bottle and all it did was make me sick and I still had to be induced. Everyone is different so I am not going to say that this won't work for you. GOOD LUCK

i used that crap with my 2nd baby.
i did go in labor soon after but lots of time on the potty as well.
a lot of women don't know that sometimes by taking castor oil can put the baby into fetal destress... so be very careful

I was 40 weeks on Saturday and drank a half a bottle on Friday. It did nothing but give me gas and a little diarreah. No contractions, no labor and I am still pregnant!!!! I go in for induction tomorrow.

I took it with my last pregnancy...all it did was make me sick!!!!!!!! I followed the directions on the bottle. It made me feel awful and made the baby have a b.m. inside the sack...so when he came out he had to be put on antibiotics just to be safe just in case some got into his little lungs.
I would NEVER recommend to anyone else to try it...I was told by my sis in law who swore by it...yeah it didn't work though. I didn't start labor till a few weeks after that.
don't risk it...just walk your little heart out and have sex. good luck and congrats.
