what i would check first is the temp gauge sending unit sensor. there is a sensor thats just for sending a temp signal to the temp gauge and i bet its going bad. this is common on all cars. the sensor for this is inexpensive... maybe 25 dollars topps. its easy to fix too but you need to locate the sensor. if your going to do it yourself, buy the sensor and then look for the same sensor on the engine. it should be somewhere by the thermostat housing or by a cylinder head. somewhere by the top of the engine. all youll need is an adjustable wrench and the ability to turn it. its very easy to fix. and just a small amount of coolant will pee out. very easy!!! do not confuse the sending unit sensor and the coolant temp sensor. they are different. the sending unit sensor is the one you want to ask for at the parts counter.

Could be the electric fan not working. Try this; While setting still, motor off, feel of the radiator fan. Dose it feel wobbly? Spin the blade it should spin free. If it feels good, start the motor and watch the temp gauge. when it gets past normal (about 3/4 or less) the fan should start. If it doesn't, take it to the shop.

These other guys are some what correct, However have you checked your antifreeze lately, Its just like your oil it has to be checked on a regular basis, Now if it is low that will solve your problem ,Now if it is full check the thermostat for leaks or replace it , Its not a bad job. good luck

cooling fans arent working the engine will cool when driving because air is forced through the radiator
turn ac on and see if the fan comes on if not that will be the problem

It's just a leaky thermostat. Cheap, easy fix.
