The BEST at preventing pregnancy and STDs is abstinence. However, that is unrealistic (especially if you're married).
So to answer your question, the best method is one that works well for YOU...without side effects, and one you'll remember to use.
The pill, patch, shot, implant, & NuvaRing are all good, but some people have problems with hormonal methods.
Barrier methods are good, but have a higher failure rate.
The IUD is NOT recommended for people who have not had at least one full-term pregnancy. Additionally, IUDs have a higher incidence of infections and complications.
Sterilization should be considered permanent, so use this ONLY if you don't ever want kids.
Talk to your doctor and discuss your options. Best bet is try a method you think you can stick to, and if you like it great; if not, you're free to change at any time.

There are several different types of birth control. I have been on most of them. No matter what, make sure you protect yourself against STDs with a condom if you are not in a mutually committed relationship.
First of all... stay away from the Depo Provera shot. It was the worst birth control I tried. Significant weigh gain, irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings, skin breakouts, headaches, and bone density loss are all side effects.
I was on several different pills. I found the low dose type worked best for me. There are so many different types, so you are bound to find one that works for you.
I am currently on Mirena IUD, and I love it. It is for women who have had at least one child, but it is the most effective form of birth control out there (that still lets you have sex).
Your best bet is to set a time up with your doctor to seriously discuss all of your options. Until then, you should make yourself aware of what is out there. The Planned Parenthood website will break everything down for you.

Abstinence is the best most effective form of birth control. 100% effective against pregnancy and STd's
I would never ever ever recommend depo provera. I was on it for four years and the side affects far outweigh the positive (only one positive).
I am on Kariva (pill) and have had no side affects and I love it.
