Antonio Damasio has a concept that at some point in your life, your brain makes a distinction between "self" and the outside world, basically a point when the brain starts to realize that for some reason, it does not hurt (information through skin sensors) when mom burns her hand on the stove, the reason being of course that I am different than mom - I "am".
Considering this concept of the discovery of the self, a baby will not start developing this distinction until it is able to interact, starting at the age of maybe 18 month.
I assume that dreaming of one-"self" then starts at the age of about 2 or 2.5 years, but I do not know of any scientific research or theories on that.
