Everyone who is saying that losing your plug means your going into labour now is wrong! I lost my plug nearly two weeks ago at 30 weeks, I spoke to the docs at the hospital who examined me and they said it was nothing to be concerned about. The mucus plug can reform itself after 24 hours if labour doesn't start.
As for the cramping, chances are it's just your body preparing itself for labour, which can happen weeks before anything actually starts. If you start having regular contractions, go straight to hospital, if not, just mention these things to your healthcare provider at your next appointment.

Cramping is a sign of labor. It could just be braxton-hicks (false labor) but you should call your doctor to be sure. Losing the mucous plug makes me think it may be the real thing. Call the doctor and see what they think.
Second children do not take longer. They usually take about half the time of the first labor. My first was 8 hours and my second was 1 hr and 45 minutes so don't wait too long to call the doc.

Losing the mucous plug means that labor will begin within the next couple of weeks- it doesn't mean that you are in labor. Call the doctor. The second labor can be pretty different from the first!

You can lose your mucous plug weeks before you start labor. I am also experiencing the menstrual cramps. It isn't labor until either:
Your water breaks.
Your contractions are regular and last longer than an hour.

Yes it can be a sign of labour and as you have already lost your mucus plug then it is quite possible that this is the beginning of labour. This is quite early to have labour so it could be braxton hicks contractions (practise ones) but you will soon know the difference. It may be worthwhile giving your midwife a call, she may be able to come to your house and examine you and tell you if its labour or not! Try not to worry about it being early, my youngest was born at 35weeks and although he was in special care for 10days while his lungs developed he has been fine since and is now a healthy, mischevious 3 year old! :0)

Your body is probably softening the cervix in preparation for your baby's birth. It's actually normal. If your water breaks and you don't start labor within a few hours, you do need to contact your doctor though.
Congratulations on the new baby, and good luck in labor.
