You have good taste.
Try using this excellent website called 'Lastfm'.
There are hundreds of thousands of users signed up. The website offers suggestions for similar artists based on what other people are already listening to.
For example, Belle and Sebastian is similar to
Sufjan Stevens
The Arcade Fire
The Shins
The Decemberists
Elliot Smith
Neutral Milk Hotel
The Flaming Lips
Broken Social Scene
Modest Mouse is similar to
The Shins
The Arcade Fire
Death Cab
The Postal Service
The Decemberists
Radiohead
Interpol
The Flaming Lips
I have used it a lot for indie band suggestions!
Good Luck

I love indie music too, the shins are my favorite!
Definitely check out The Kooks, Arctic Monkeys, Spoon, The Fratellis, Sherwood, Franz Ferdinand, The Honorary Title, The Bravery, Anberlin, Snow Patrol, Jack's Mannequin, Dandy Warhols, Hot Hot Heat, and the Caesars
I know a bunch of others but those are my favorites.

the best ive heard among the indie artists are: patrick wolf, arcade fire, of montreal, modest mouse, shins, kings of leon, decemberists, and my personal favorite wolf parade. listen to their whole album 'apologies to the queen mary'.. and their EP. and of montreals album 'hissing fauna are you the destroyer?' is nearly perfect. patrick wolfs album has yet to be released in the US.. but you can download them. its well worth it... listen to the songs 'magic position' and 'accident and emergency'. you'll see what i mean.
