My computers just started to play about when I try and type a capital letter in Internet explorer or word.

Depending on the letter pressed it will close the current window, open a random program like webcam or media player, or shut all the open windows and ask it I want the shut down the computer. This also applies to special characters like the at symbol and question marks.

I’ve checked the language settings for the keyboard and they are set to English, United Kingdom.

I’m using windows xp pro, and a Logitech mx3000 wireless keyboard, and I’ve changed all the batteries and tried re-connecting the wireless device, but it has no effect.

It’s properly some sort of virus but it's really starting to annoy me now as i keep closing an open window halve way through typing a message and losing the message.

Any ideas

Sometimes Windows thinks you're holding down the [Control] key. My solution is to press [Shift] [Control] [Alt] from both sides, many times. Or try rebooting. Or try removing custom keyboard software (for example, if you have a multimedia keyboard).

I don't know why the stuck [Ctrl] does happen, my guess is that the original IBM PC keyboard technology is from the late 70's, made even worse in the PC AT's (it had more keys, so it can't detect many simultaneous keypresses).

Go Control Panel>Accessibility and check what settings are there. In that option you can setup things like one thats' happening to you. Also install program from disk that came with your keyboard, and check out settings there. If this doesn't help, install AVG antivirus and Ad-Aware antispyware, update them and do a full system scan with both (one than another).

see if it happens with another keyboard, perferably one that plugs into the computer directly. If it still happens its a software issue, if it does not its a problem with your wireless keyboard. sometimes liquid thats it spilt onto a keyboard creates this problem b/c it shorts out the alt button.

Go to Control Panel>Accessibility. Take out all the checkmarks in each tab.
