I have a ten month old crawling daughter, and I'm pregnant. I can't find the way they are getting in, they only show up when there are stray crumbs on the floor. I'm pretty sure they are just living in my carpet (it's berber) but no matter how many times a day I vaccuum, they keep showing up.

I don't know that this will help- but somewhere I heard that they don't like citrus, such as lemon or orange. If you have a mortar and pestle, what you can do is take dried lemon rind (such as what you see in the spice racks in the store), grind it to a powder, mix it with baking soda, then sprinkle it on your carpet and vacuum later. A friend showed this recipe to me for carpet freshener, but it might work against ants too.

Good luck!

no, they dont live in your carpet.. they live underneath your house, and in your yard... the carpet isnt a suitable environment for ants..

the deal is that when you leave food on the floor.. ants will come to it, and leave there homes for hours, days, and possibly weeks if it means that they get to eat and feed their queen...

So try putting down a bit of gasoline on the outside of your doorsteps... just a half of cup or so... and then try to keep all the crumbs off the floor.. try eating where there is tiled floors, so it is easy to clean up...

gasoline is strong enough to kill plants too... so dont get it on the grass... it will stay there for a little while... and once it is dry, it is harmless to the kid, unless he like licks it constantly... lol..

but try that...

With your daughter crawling and you expecting you might try spraying the foundation outside with ant killer. I also I have a friend that has ant problem they have stakes now you can put outside around your house close to the foundation and it kills ants. I think you can get them @ Lowes Menard's anywhere like that.

Look around your house. Look everywhere. Even in your bathroom. If there's a crack, thats probably where they're coming from.
also, don't be afraid the ants will never go away, keep on vacuming and make the house safe for your daughter.
