Moderates like you really constitute the majority - you're split between the two parties, but moderate democrats have more in common with moderate republicans than they do with the radical lefties that the party pays more attention to. The same goes for moderate republicans, who have more in common with democrats just the near side of the party divide than with the radical neo-cons running thier party.
In the 90s, and even the Regan era, both parties apealed strongly to the middle to win swing votes. Today - AFAICT - both parties apeal primarily to thier 'base,' because that gets them the money and campaign workers to snow the less committed members of the electorate.
Moderates would have to become radicalized - become highly politically active - to reverse the trend. And, well, wouldn't really be moderate anymore then, would they?

I know how you feel. I'm pro-life, anti-ALL taxes, pro-gun rights, pro-gay rights (and pro-gay marriage, as well as polygamous marriage - why exclude those weirdos?), pro-drug legalization, anti-Patriot Act, pro-free trade... You get the point. You can see how it might be difficult for someone like me to vote Democrat or Republican. Both parties are so utterly disappointing and worthless. I'm not sure if you're very moderate or if you hold varying (more extreme) positions that happen to be claimed by one side or the other. I'm in the second camp. If you're like me, I recommend checking out the Libertarian Party. If you're more moderate, I suggest that you pick your most important issues and see which party matches up. Being a mixture of the Republicans and the Democrats does not necessarily mean you're moderate. I don't think anybody could call me moderate.

YES!! I take the position of republicans in some issues and democrats in others. I've been a registered independent since I turned 18, and thought about changing it so I can vote in the primaries, but I really don't feel strongly about registering under either of the two parties.
...besides they are both doing a crap job right now anyway...

Yes. I actually think that stereotypical labels are useless these days. Most thinking people have a variety of opinions from different parts of the political spectrum. The classic one is being socially liberal and fiscally conservative. A person could believe in gay marriage yet still believe in balancing the federal budget.
People who think along a strict party line usually have not done much thinking, researching or reading.

Do some research and you'll find that democrats and republicans are the same evil. they're destroying our country from within. I'm not falling for the false left/right paradigm.

A lot of us are. You just have to decide which side would be best in the long run... I used to be a bright eyed liberal., but as a man, I have found that as disgusting the Conservative side seems to be at times, it is the one side that really represents the values of the USA.
Please make your own decision. Good luck to you.

I started on the right, swung to the left, and now find the middle more and more appealing all the time. Nice pic by the way, hehehe.

Not me. I am very conservative. It is hard to find politician who are truly conservative. I notice all the Republican candidates for President in 08 are claiming to be conservative. Isn't it interesting that none, repeat none, of the Democrat candidates are claiming to be liberal. If they get pinned down they use words like "progressive" or "centrist."

I think 80% of us are caught in the middle of the 10% on each end of the spectrum.
