You pay someone to come take it away to Old Refrigerator Heaven.

Companies like Appliance Recycling Centers of America:

Garbage and recycling:

Or, put it in your truck and take it to the proper facility in your area (you'll pay either way ...)

It is unlawful in nearly every state to dump a refrigerator and please be sure that a child can't get shut in it before disposal.
Look on the net in your area for recycling centers that take them for free. The older models have freon that can't be released into the environment but can be recycled and recycle centers know how to do that properly.
The other suggestions received are good too.

if it still works, you can sell it to a used appliance store. they probably won't give you a lot for it but it will get rid of it. also, if your getting a new one, many times the company will offer to take away the old one when they deliver the new one(they did this with mine). if its working, take out an add in the freebies section of the paper and give it away. often these ads are free. if its broke, call your garbage service to find out when bulk trash day is and set it out there. if you don't have bulk trash day, borrow a pickup and pay to dump it off at the dump or bulk trash center.

Try Craigslist.org for your area. Where I am there are always ads from people wanting your old appliances. You can either reply to an ad, or remit your own stating you have it. Can either give away, or sell. Craigslist is free. It's a great site. So is Freecycle but it was already mentioned. Link listed for both

usually the folks that sell you a new one will pick up old for small fee. if it still works you could try freecycle.org

most communities have some sort of discarded appliance pickup arrangement with the garbage/recycling vendor. the city government internet site for LA could probabaly direct you on that.

If it still runs PG&E as a recycling program where they will PAY you 30.00 to come and pick it up. But it must be running and plugged in. When I bought this house there were 2 here I did this with.
