It's in code or slang of the time, some sort of 'common wisdom', like alot of older sayings. Perhaps this is an ancient reason for 'feet' being a polite euphemism for the genitals & we've rediscovered it. http://www.mindhacks.com/blog/2004/11/little_men_and_their.html http://www.science-frontiers.com/sf123/sf123p14.htm

I don't know about that, but she recently moved into a shoe with Velcro straps and was forced to leave because each night some idiot would open and close the straps enough times to wake up her kids and would then run off into the night.
She's currently living in her summer home: a flip-flop.

According to the story the "shoe" was where she lived. Maybe the shoelaces you mentioned could have been the branches from the tree's overhead. As far as too many children...They became the best basketball team ever. & everybody lived happily ever after.

I always wondered who fathered all of those children, and why wasn't he there to help raise and support the kids?
The poor woman was at her wit's end, and needed help in how to control her anger. ("gave them all broth/without any bread/ then spanked them all soundly/ and sent them to bed.)
Maybe the father(s) of the children left because she wasn't a very nice person. It's sad, really.

no,. but maybe she SHOULD have had them tied up....then the old man would not have gotten "IN" so many times....
my version........
There was an old woman
who lived in a shoe.
She had so many children
she didn't know what to do.
There was another old woman,
who lived in a shoe.
Didn't have any children...
She knew what to do!!!
