First: Faeries didn't become tiny or winged until William Shakespear wrote Mid Summer Night's Dream. Before that, they were normal size and appeared to look much like humans. They're also not just irish folklore. Nearly every culture around the world has some sort of faery legend, even Mayan and Aztec. They're kinda like dragons in that way
EDIT: Terry, just so that you are aware; Eire is NOT somewhere between heaven and hell. Eire is the name of a Tuatha De Dannan (one of the oldest race of faeries). She was the daughter of Daghda. It was her responsibility to take care of the land and to ensure the safety of the Fal; a large stone that foretold the future. Ireland was named for her it is literally Eire's Land.

The mischievous ones were called pixies and the graceful ones fairies or faeries i believe. And they were recorded before Shakespeare's time with more human like features like elves and such.

It is of Irish Folklore that Fairies are fallen angels who were not bad enough to send to hell, but a bit too mischievous to stay in heaven. So, the sent them to Eire which is a bit of both.
