A lot is 2 words.

A lot = a whole bunch. It is two words.

A lot is a great amount, so therefore there is one lot. Sometimes you can express even more hyperbolic quantities by saying lots, which would mean several great quantities.

Don't be confused with allot, a verb which means to distribute.

I will never forget my 10th grade english teacher Mrs. Domangue, she taught me that a lot was two words. Everytime I had it wrong on a paper she would deduct points.

two words: a lot

Though most teachers disapprove of the phrase "a lot". Try to use "plenty", ect.

If you mean 'plenty' then it would be 'a lot'.

If you mean to assign something to someone or share it out then it would be 'allot'.
