The Fender American Stratocaster... its the most versatile sounding, most cost effective guitar on the market. Countless past and present guitar masters made their mark on music with this axe- I highly recommend it.

That's like asking what's the best song ever, or what's the best band ever, or who's the best guitarist ever. There isn't one. Look at the responses so far. Everyone has their own opinion on this. One person says the Gibson is the best for the blues. BB King played one. But Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Eric Clapton play Strats. They are pretty good blues players. Bottom line is find the guitar that you like. Check the sound, the feel the weight, and all around playability. The same with an amp. Find one that sounds like you want it to. Spend what you can afford and get what you like. Play lots. Don't make a quick decision based on what you read here by me or anyone else. It's YOUR guitar. Get what YOU want. Personally I own a Strat, a Les Paul, an ESP and 2 Martin acoustics. I have a Pevey bandit 112 for home and a Marshall JCM900 Dual Reverb with a Marshall 4-12 cabinet. That works for me.

The bottom line is that it is a matter of opinion. You really need to be asking what guitar is best for your particular style, and you are the only one that can answer that.
It's hard to beat an older strat for playing "guitar strangler" rock-n-roll.
I spent years playing a Les Paul Custom because I like the wider neck and more solid feel.

It all depends on what style of music you want to play:
Country, rock: Fender Telecaster
Country, old: Gibson L5
Hard rock: Fender American Strat
Blues: Gibson Les Paul, L5, or ES335
Acoustic: Martin (lots of models to choose from)
Classical: Pimentel

Depends on the style of music you prefer. Me being influenced by The Jam and Britpop stuff would go for a Rickenbacker, but they are expensive.

it is a matter of taste. Gibson and Fender are time tested. I really like Ibenez and Charvelle.
