Just hit 100,000 Km, on this little car. Manual says to do timing belt after 100k, would I be taking a major risk trying to hit a few more K's on it (20,000 - 30,000) before I change the belt?

Unfortunately, you have what's known as an "interference engine" meaning that the valves may hit the pistons when the timing belt breaks causing major engine damage. The website below says Kia Rio USA models need the timing belt changed at 60,000 miles so you may be able to go an extra 10,000 US miles. But if your not going to sell or trade the car, you really can't take a chance for too long especially since your powertrain warranty requires that it be changed in order to maintain the warranty.

I too have a kia although its a sportage. It says to change the belt at 60,000 unless you live in California and then to change it at 100,000. I have never figured out why Cal. would make a 40,000 mile difference. They showed me what can happen at the dealer. I changed mine at 67,000 and it is almost time again. I would dare go over some especially the diff. between the states. I do not see why I would need to do it more often in Vt. but this is what my manual says.I asked at the dealer and showed them my manual and they had no idea at all.

Absolutely. If a timing belt breaks, not only will it not give you any warning, it can in many situations wreck the cylinder head. This will leave you replacing the top portion, more or less, of your engine. Unfortunately, it isn't like a drive belt, where you can inspect it for wear.

Why would you risk ignoring the owners manual? You are only risking your engine.
