So far as they are coming through an electoral process it is democracy.
Other families are also trying their level best, but there is no acceptance for them. Wise Indian people know their intentions.
It is because there is no match to the charisma of the family which you are referring to, that a dyed sheep can not be accepted.

I know of no true democracies in this world.
The U.S.A. is a republic with democratically elected representatives.
If the family in question were el;ected, it still wouldn't be a democracy.
A true democracy doesn't exist for good reason.
In a democracy, the people at large vote for all laws and all changes in law and policy. There would be no stability but anything could be changed by drumming up popular consensus on TV (with on control regarding truth or principle)and having everyone turn out to vote for the currently most popular ideas.
I think you can see the problems that would create and why there are no democracies.

It is a kind of democracy if the family is chosen to do so by the people of the country through democratic process of some type.
Democracy is like an ordinary computer: Garbage in Garbage out. High technology democracy cannot be absorbed by Indians.

In India the gandhi family is there and then there is the karunanidhi family in the south, then the devegowda family in karnataka. i think bringing in children and relatives into politics is increasing and children are even groomed for active politics. in the south it is quite common. In the case of sonia's family the entire congress party seems to behind them although there are many stalwarts in the party. but for sonia fighting it out after rajiv's death, there would be no viable alternative to the BJP in the centre, and the enttire congress establishment would have been in disarray. Coming to your question the destiny of a nation should be in the hands of the executive, the legislature and the Judiciary.

If the family is voted in for a set term, then I would say it sounds like a democracy in a republic.

history reveals that when a person of any other origin rules it makes heavy losses .
wise men protest but their own brothers serve as dogs to the rulers and clears the way of the ruler. result loses .
MY HINDU SAYS -

but we eat more than her .
and the most important the idle people always blame the most respectable person.

Only if this family (biological, mind you, not sentimental) happens to consist of millions of people. As I've never heard of any family like that, this situation sounds very much like some form of oligarchy.
