i get tired of seeing all these people talking about dropping gun control. that is absolutely insane. we need much stricter gun control laws that allows only the right people the opportunity to carry guns. its simple. you should go through a very strict and in depth background check, not just to see if you are a felon or not. only responsible people should carry guns, plain and simple. you shouldnt be able to walk into a gun show and buy any gun you want without a background check (like at columbine). you shouldnt be able to buy military style assault weapons. i would never advocate taking away guns, but how can anyone argue that we dont need strict gun control laws? do you think any joe smith should be able to have one? how in the world would that help? wouldnt that cause MORE gun crimes because people that normally wouldnt have access to guns all of a sudden can go to any gun store and walk away with one.

Stiffer gun control raises crime rates, not lowers. The only people who obide by the law are honest citizens. It just gives the criminals easier unarmed targets. I'm armed at all times, and chances are in a crowd of ten people another 3 of them are legally armed. Had the other students been allowed to carry on campus, he wouldn't have gotten to victim number two.

" The FBI reports that the nation`s total violent crime rate declined every year between 1991 2004.12 In 2004, the violent crime rate fell to a 30-year low, lower than any time since 1974. The murder rate fell to a 39-year low, lower than any time since 1965. The 2004 robbery and aggravated assault rates were lower than any time since 1968 and 1984, respectively. Since 1991, total violent crime has decreased 39%; murder and non-negligent manslaughter, 44%; rape, 24%; robbery, 50%; and aggravated assault, 33%.13 Between 2003-2004, the violent crime rate declined 2.2%.14 Concurrently, the most recent Bureau of Justice Statistics crime victimization survey found that violent crime is lower than anytime since 1973, when the first such survey was conducted"

The more laid back we get on gun laws, the less crime that happens. The reason is, a criminal is mainly ******* who don't have the bag to screw with armed people. I WILL shoot and kill anyone who poses danger to my life or those around me. I WILL do it within the law. I WILL defend my right to own handguns as long as I live. you WILL NEVER be able to talk politicans into making gun control bills and or getting them passed. Statistics show(democrats 1994) that if you try to ban our right in any way shape or form to own a firearm, you will get voted out forever. so, as much as someone may like gun control 1.) you're not educated on the facts 2.) it will never happen 3.) if it does happen "MY COLD DEAD HANDS"

Felons and crazies buy a lot of guns under the table that have been stolen so maybe stricter gun control laws would have helped, but I'll bet you can go to almost any flea market in Virginia and ask a few likely looking people who will have a gun around that they'll sell you if you have enough money.

That's exactly how the laws are set up here in Cali.
You cannot legally purchase a firearm if you have been convicted of a felony, or have even been arrested (not convicted) for Domestic Violence. You can't buy a gun if you have ever been held in a psych ward. You cannot purchase a handgun without a two week wait, while your background is checked.
Guess how many felons on the street have guns in Cali? Nearly all of them. You can go into South Central L.A. and buy a handgun from dudes standing on street corners; stolen, serial numbers filed off, and ready to go.

You misguided Liberals swear that G.W. Bush is dismantling the Constitution, but yet you attack the Second Amendment.

What a bunch of hypocrites!

If gun control works, why has the UK formed special Police Teams to address the rise of gun crime in the UK?

Why was the Mayor of Nagasaki Japan murdered. Where the Chief of Police stated "The only people in Japan with guns are the Gangsters."

It takes 20 to 45 minutes for police to make a emergency response in my area. I'll keep my gun .... Oh, I'm trained and a retired police officer and as a police officer, I trained civilians for their pistol permits. 100% NRA too

I've said this in many other question replies so far today. I should have it as a boilerplate reply.

Look at the history of mass violence in this country.

Do you honestly believe that gun control laws would have prevented what happened yesterday?

If you do, tell me how so many other unneeded deaths happened in the US over the past 50 years since this wave of gun laws began. And how many of those deaths had nothing to do with guns!

Not one gun law has stopped a person hell bent on taking a life. They never will.

This isn't the time to talk about bad law. It's time to talk about the value of life and why people should respect that value.

It's not about gun violence. It's about all violence. Start there and then we'll have something to talk about.

Gun Control Causes Crime. Gun control has never worked anywhere so why cite it as a solution? Military-style weapons in perticular are used in less than 1% of crimes involving firearms, this proves you are just a liberal instead of looking out for the common good.

I think it was a tragedy first and foremost and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

The killer alone caused the crime, but the high number of victims is directly caused by gun control.

They were just sitting ducks with no way to defend themselves much like the victims of Colin Ferguson. Concealed-carry advocates warned us all long ago to expect tragedies like this as long as we have gun control.

When only criminals have guns the rest of us can only ponder tactics like "notifications."

In a state where concealed-carry is allowed or promoted, the loss of life could have been much less. He may have shot one or two, but a concealed-carrier would have dispatched him right quick.

Sadly there is no way to prevent a killer with a gun. In tribal Africa where there are no manufactured guns, tribesman make them from pipes and rubber-bands so clearly gun control is not the answer. You can make a gun out of wood in an hour! He could have stabbed just as many with a knife.

Since you will never stop the OFFENSE, we must allow ourselves a DEFENSE. We are not all of one culture anymore, so violence will only increase.

HB 1572 was a Virginia state bill to allow college students to carry arms on campus to protect themselves from tragedies like what happened at Virginia Tech. The bill was defeated

The spokesman for Virginia Tech was happy to hear the bill [HB 1572] was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

The fact is NOT passing the bill allowing students to defend themselves caused many more deaths. States that pass concealed-carry laws experience lower crime rates, Texas is a good example of this.

The only way to prevent these killing rampages is concealed-carry. Would you rather protect yourself or wait for the folly of police or school "notification?”

OK so we know how you "feel".

The problem is the law, you know the 2nd amendment.

You cannot buy "military assualt weapons" today

Sit down and think about this. Even with the most stringent gun control laws guns will still be available because they have to be (see above) If you want to "ban" the RIGHT of people to have firearms than petition your Congressman to repeal the 2nd ammendment.

Because gun control doesn't work. Look at the facts. In all the countries with strict gun control laws gun violence is INCREASING. While in the United States gun violence is DECREASING year by year. It goes down even more in States that allow concealed carry and even more in States that allow open carry.

Your argument is flawed. Your argument is coming from the perspective that guns create criminals. So the only way to stop criminals is to take away or restrict access to firearms. What I need you to do is go pick up a dictionary and look up the definition of "criminal". A criminal, by definition, does not obey laws. You advocate stricter background searches for people who buy guns. What you fail to realize is that the average law abiding citizen doesn't go out and murder people. The people who do murder others buy their guns ILLEGALLY. You're an idiot really. You think restricting the general publics access to guns is going to make gun crime go down. The fact is criminals who use guns in their work (committing crimes) do not buy legal firearms. So what good is a strict background check going to do if a gang banger can pick up a 9mm out of some guys trunk for $500?

Try using your brain on this one: Criminals DO NOT BUY GUNS AT GUN STORES! THEY BUY GUNS OUT OF TRUNKS AND FROM OTHER CRIMINALS.

IF YOU TAKE AWAY MY ABILITY TO BUY A GUN FOR SELF DEFENSE YOU MAKE ME DEFENSELESS AND GIVE MY ATTACKER A BETTER CHANCE OF HURTING MY FAMILY AND MYSELF.

Just as in the abortion debate, the Iraq debate, immigration debate and global warming debate, both sides have extremist groups that push their agenda, these advocates see compromise as a weakness. It is all or nothing with them.

This was a not gun zone and it didn't stop it. This kid had guns that had the numbers filed off. You can have all the gun laws in the world and it won't change what happened. That kid did went under the radar.
