1/3 + 2/3a = 21/3

1/3 + 2/3 a =7/3 Multiply through by 3

1 +2a + 7

2a = 6

a = 3

Check 1/3 + 2/3 (3) = 2 1/3

1/3 + 2 = 21/3

2 1/3 = 7/3

therefore

1/3 + 2/3a = 7/3
1/3 - 1/3 + 2/3a = 7/3 - 1/3
2/3a = 6/3
2/3a X 3/2 = 6/3 X 3/2

6/6a = 18/6
1a = 3

a=3

1/3+2/3a=2 1/3
1/3+2/3a=7/3

Multiply both sides by 3:
1+2a=7
1-1+2a=7-1
2a=6
a=3

Check:
1/3+2/3(3)=2 1/3
1/3+6/3=2 1/3
1/3+2=2 1/3
2 1/3=2 1/3

1/3 + 2/3a=2 1/3
1/3-1/3+2/3a=2 1/3-1/3
2/3a=2
2/3a(3/2)=2/1(3/2)= 3

a=3

1/3 + 2/3a = 2 1/3
(Step 1: subtract 1/3 from both sides)

2/3a = 2
(Step 2: multiply both sides by 3)

2a = 6
(Step 3: divide both sides by 2)

a = 3

You can combine steps 2 and 3 if you are comfortable doing that algebraically, good luck!

2007-04-17 08:13:34 · answer #6 · answered by dangerthird 2 · 1 0

1/3 + 2/3a = 2 1/3

2/3a = 2

(3/2)2/3a = (3/2)2

6/6a = 6/2

1a = 3/1

a = 3

You start by subtracting the 1/3 from both sides. that gives you 2/3 a = 2. then you multiply both sides by 3/2 to get the a by itself. that gives you 6/2, which equals to 3.
