Arctic monkeys etc, is all quality music, others you should listen to
-Bloc Party, - Babyshambles, Dirty Pretty Things, Libertines, Killers, Zutons, Kooks, Fratellis, Subways etc
But i also have to say some rap is good, but only in small doses. Particularly old skool rap, early 1990's stuff - NWA etc!

I hate current music especially rap it is terrible! I often ask myself the same thing and the only thing I can come up with is that people like it because they think its cool and thats what most radio stations seem to play.
I am into 50s, 60s rock, new wave rock, psycadelic rock and easy listening jazz type stuff like Tony Bennett. (I am only 15 btw). Some of my favorite bands are The Beatles, Elvis Costello, Buddy Holly, The Dave Clark Five and Muse.
I think most people don't take the time to make an opinion on music until its too late, if people cared about they listen to then there would be more diversity in musical tastes.
I agree with you on rap causing violence. What you listen to has a big impact on you. If you listen to songs about females being sex toys and being shot at by rival gangs all the time why wouldn't that have an affect on someone. Music plays a big part in peoples lives whether they choose to acknowledge it or not.
If people listened to better music that isn't so violent then I believe that more people would be working to solve alot of the issues affecting society today.

I agree with you about today's rap. It all sounds the same and there is no meaning to the lyrics ( ex: chicken noodle soup with a soda on the side...). I don't particularly like the arctic monkeys but I can see your point about indie music. I like R&B, Blues, alternative/punk/rock. Some of the artists I listen to include:
Snow Patrol
Fall Out Boy
The Almost
The Academy Is
Cute is What We Aim For
The Temptations
The Ramones
Radiohead
Joss Stone
John Legend
Johnny Lang
B.B. King
There are so many more but that list gives you a bit of an idea.

Actually, most of todays music, no matter the genre, is designed for people who are ignorant about what real music is. Real music is more than a beat with someone screaming to it. Drum machines, scratching, "Dj's" and all the like are so old and worn out it is sickening.
Over the course of time, music has progressed, until about 20 years ago that is. A little band called "Devo" knew what was happening. The "de-evolution" of music. The "dumbing down" so that mindless twits could be "musicians". If a person can not play their instrument, whether it be a physical instrument or a voice, without the aid of effects or processing, they simply are not a musician.
So lets face the facts about today's music. It is aimed at the 13 to 25 crowd. That's who buys most of the CD's. And since we are facing facts, 13 to 25 year olds are, as a group, about as dumb as people can get. Ergo, the music made today is dumb to match their taste, of which they have none.

I am definitely not a big fan of rap.
I like a lot of classic rock. I like The Rolling Stones a whole heck of a lot - The Arctic Monkeys are great, I like Nirvana, and Coldplay is indeed a great band, but some of their stuff drags on.
I like music in general. Currently, I'm really into the Blue Oyster Cult.

rap makes perfect sense to people who speak that language. rap is also made up of samples that are taken from rock, jazz, blues and many other genre's that get credit for being decent but for some reason if you say a peom over it people assume it is less decent.
i will say rap is going down the drain right now but rap all together does not suck and is by far not talentless. and anyone who thinks that any 'ol body can rap and it takes no talent: they ought to rap cuz there is alot of money in it and if it's so easy they could just quit their job and rap.

and don't forget the voice thing they do now to adjust your pitch and tone so you sound better than you really are. That is where that electronica voice sound (that I very much hate) comes from, playing with the adjustments. Music tends to go in cycles. The corporations really have a lot of control on what is published and what is played. Corporations go for formula and mediocrity because it doesn't "offend" and thus sells. marketing is what drives the music scene on the large, and not music quality. Every so often bubbles of new styles or new talents break out into the open despite the corporate suppression. Some of this music eventually gets gobbled up and sanitized by the corporates, making it necessary for a new cycle of "fringe" elements to fight their way out into the open. Tend to be bursts of really good music as a result.

There's a few rap songs that are ok. But it really all sound the same. Singing about ho's and what not... and the thing is the younger people don't know what they are singing about!! nor does my mother...when the song comes on she just likes the beat!! I like almost anything....but not rap...mainly Classic Rock and Country. Music needs to be cleaned up...just like the radio....Imus got fired....why not clean up the music...they are using the same words he did.

Dude there are some people left that listen to decent music. I have to search for it though. I dig the Monkeys. You should check out Ween. They have a reputation for being a silly band, which they are sometimes. But I think they are the greatest band making music today. Check out Quebec and Chocolate & Cheese.

I mean, there's people who think R&B isn't decent. They think it's too sexual. There are people who think Rock isn't decent. So I think many things can be described as not decent but that doesn't mean all of it is. Some rap is really good. It talks about life or some rap makes you get up & dance. So not all rap is bad. I like some of it. I can understand it cuz I hang around people who are into it. I've grown up listening to it so I can understand it just fine. I just never heard of some of those rock bands. I mean, if nobody never heard it, you can't hold that against them. People have preferences, likes, & dislikes. So people just have their different views about rap.
