They will fly if they need to. Most of the time they don't because they are in or under places to hide.

For those cockroaches who can fly... that's what their for.
Examples of flying roaches:
American Cockroach
Cuban Cockroach
Field Cockroach
Smoky-brown Cockroach
Brown-banded Cockroach

Cockroache which can not fly, so their wings serve no function whatsoever:
Oriental Cockroach

Good question. I don't think they have a function. Also, If I'm not mistaken, not all cockroaches have wings.

They will, and they do. At least our giant mutant cockroaches here in Florida do.
