While watching various US TV shows about newborn babies in hospital, we noticed they put a KY jelly type liquid onto the babies eyes. anyone know why they do this?

UGH GROSS!!! I have never heard that!!! or seen that here in the US. I have never seen anyone putting anything in a baby's eyes!

I am not certain - but I think it is an antibiotic which protect against syphilis. I think this is standard operating procedure as it prevents blindness and the downsides are minimal.
