In a way, we're not. Our Constitution was designed to be very flexible. It's been amended over two dozen times to reflect changes in society. Because the United States uses a common law/constitutional law hybrid for our legal system, our courts can also easily adapt to change. In fact, some would argue they adapt too easily. Even with the way the Constitution was written, the Executive Branch and the federal government both have far more power today than 200 years ago.

you are showing a vast ignorance about the nature of the constitution, the Bill of Rights.. and all amendments since then with this question.... with amendments.. the constitution is allowed to progress with the morality of the nation.. we are not locked in to how things were 200 years ago.

Because if we tried to write a new one, nobody would agree on anything so we'd end up going back to the old one. If we managed to all agree on a new constitution, it'd be so long and confusing that only lawyers would understand it.

I'm joking, but also half-serious. Look how often we pass new amendments, and they're only adding one rule at a time.

Because no one has managed to write a better one. There have been amendments to the Consititution.

Now is your chance for change. You write one, get it approved by Congress, signed by the President, AND ratified by 2/3 of the state legislatures.

What part of the Constitution don't you like?

Our Constitution is based on principles, not specifics.

The laws we write on a daily basis move with the times. The Constitution ensures that those laws remain within our principles.

Because it is a perfect document that changes with the times.

What was true then, is true now. As times and circumstances change, it can be amended. What a beautiful thing it is.

Now, if we could just get the idiot in the Oval Office to read and believe it, life would be good again.
