why not?

this is totally a guess...and partly based on stereotypes. i am korean myself, and this is just a generalized (mis?)conception that i have... considering he was supposedly a business major that was switching to English or creative writing:

in korean culture, u are praised for having good grades. education is Everything. it don't matter if u are socially inept, if u are sullen, angry, mean, nasty Inside.. as long as u show that u are polite to adults, stay out of people's way, do ur work, etc etc, u can get away with a LOT. because they do not emphasize being Well Rounded. being Caring. being Unselfish... all of those things are just not really emphasized, not actually shaped or encouraged. it should just "already be there" (yeah right!). therefore, all the emphasis is on Education and Career. so, in this case, i bet that when he was considering changing to English major, his parents gave him SHI* about it. they probably said he was too stupid to stay in business, that other people are doing this and that , but he is doing "Creative Writing" where there are NO jobs...blah blah all this negative nonsense. (i'm not saying i'ts all their fault, but i'm just saying this is how a lot of korean parents just think). they probably put him down, made him feel stupid, said they were embarrased, that his sister when to Princeton, what are YOU doing...blah blah.

and so, the fact that he became an English major could've been stressful already, going against his parents' wishes. in fact, 10-1 he didn't even tell them he switched majors. either way, that can be a lot of frustration and stress against ur parents, or what others think of you.... my guess is that he hated everyone cuz he wasnt' well prepared in releasing anger and stress out...he kept everything inside...which is sooo bad for the youth... i feel sorry for his parents and family... at the same time , i see a lot of danger in how some kids are brought up. whether or not in asian or whatever culture, i think there is a HUGE gap between what an Individual child NEEDS in order to be a productive member of society.

anyways..... just.. SIIIIGH!!!!!!

For the same reason an English speaking American would major in French, German, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin or any other language. Yes, its true that there are many opportunities for an English major to teach English in Korea, but usually they want people who have an American accent. I don't know what was the story in this guy's case.

Why do you think English is worthless? English literature is very rich. It's a good major.
This man has been in the USA since 8 years old. He probably cannot speak Korean.

What does it matter if he was Korean, Chinese, Malaysian...and chose to major in English.

He didn't major in common sense, preserving human life, or psychology for that matter.

The only major he specialized in was taking human life, and graduating to a whole other world...death by suicide.
I'll give him an award for being educated enough to save Virginia's taxpayers a lot of money for unnecessary court cost proceedings, by taking his own life.

To get to the other side;) LOL

Because he felt like it.

Because he's a spy.

Because he's stupid and doesn't know any better.

Because he based his life on Shakespeare's misery.

Because he was sick of being teased while singing Christmas songs such as: Jingle Bells and Deck the Halls...

Because the devil made him do it.

Because he knew that a major outranks a minor...
