How would you go about collecting the hundreds of thousands of guns that are out there in the hands of criminals today? Do you honestly think that the criminals who have the countless unresgistered weapons (the weapons that are used in 90% of crimes) will turn them over because you banned them? Do you honestly think that if guns were banned that Cho Seung-Hui would have willingly given up his guns and not stormed into that school like a maniac-killing people, just because guns were banned?
The guns are out there people, and they are in the hands of criminals. Exactly how would you get them out of their hands? And why do you want to take them out of the hands of law abiding citizens who only want to protect themselves and their families? If guns were banned, thats what would happen. People like me would not be allowed to own guns. Criminals would still have the guns.

Consider this: the two Columbine students were quite possibly people just "like you" until something "snapped"(!) and they methodically murdered their fellow high school students and teachers.
Guns don't kill people. People with guns kill people. And the people who've been going on these school shooting rampages are, for the most part, not prior criminals.
Police officers and members of the armed services need weapons. Hunters (who occasionally accidentally shoot one another too) could be licensed for HUNTING guns (AK-47s or Magnums are NOT hunting guns). Everything else should be melted down.

If guns are outlawed only the outlaws will have them.

we have strong gun laws, and people with intent will find a way to perpetrate. Guns are tools as are fire, knives, pitchforks, ammonium nitrate, jet fuel, gasoline, the problem is NOT the object. The problem is the perpetrator.

I believe many people have become willing to usurp their personal liberty for security they will clamor for a police state before long.

I believe that tragedies such as this ought to give us a reason to pause and look at the causes as to why angry people do atrocious and horrific acts.

I believe the media is culpable. I believe that parents are culpable, I believe liberals are culpable, I believe by removing any semblance of conflict from schools we not given kids healthy outlets for conflict and aggression.
When I was a kid, I carried my 22 rifle and 20 gauge shotgun in the truck of my car so I could go hunting after school, I never once thought when I was getting picked on by a bully to go get the gun and kill him.. I thought differently because I respected myself and those around me. If it came to blows with the bully it would be with fists in the parking lot. a bloody nose generally stopped it.

Guns are not the problem. Ignorance of anything is dangerous and society has become ignorant of firearms. Both of my children have certified in hunter safety and firearm training. They not only know HOW to use firearms but HOW NOT to use them. This is the problem with schools today, we no longer accept firearms as a norm so they've become abnormal AND people clamor for control. This is wrong.

The media is wrong in reporting facts. This not the worse, not even close.

I have to agree with this poster. Law enforcement need to be aware of illegal weapons in gangs, illegals hands threatening wars and genocide on youtube, video games that portray violence and even the murdering of cops. Music, tv programs, movies,,etc...all teaching violence and hatred, and crime.
Now, this is NOT acceptable. Our law enforcement was once the most respected force in America, NOW, people are going against them and killing them for no reason. One was just killed in tenn in jan by 2 illegal citizens and this is accepted and nothing new for mexico. They arent the only ones that kill, but they are becoming the majority now.
I dont think law abiding citizens should give up guns.

You are absolutely right! And, as a private citizen, I feel I have the right to own a gun to protect myself against those criminals. You can even get a permit to carry a gun on your person in my state to protect yourself. I have chosen not to do that, but I guarantee you if a criminal comes into my home to do me harm, they will find themselves dead!

To quantify your question even more - "there are 200 million guns in private hands in the US right now (for a population of 300 million". i.e, on average, more than a gun per every adult!! Ofcourse, these are only the documented/official numbers!

Good point.
Why do people want the "quick fix", their only answers to the hard questions are to make this or that illegal.
