How many questions do you have to answer in one category to get that, and do they have to be best answers?

The more you answer in a particular category, and the more Best Answers you get (not the percentage) the more likely you are to get a "top contributor" badge next to your name, up to 3 categories. Levels, and points have nothing to do with it.

you need to get at least 10% best answers

I'll be true full with you - I have NO idea. When they were first handed out I didn't get one, then it magically appeared about two weeks later. I wish YAHOO would publish an explanation as everyone is just speculating on how to get/keep them.

I am not really sure but someone told me you have to get 100 best answers in one category.

It means they should try and answer some Q's in some different categories.

No, it's just how many questions they answered. I find most of those so called "top contributers" give the worst or most wrong answers.
