Solve.... 1/5 + 1/6
First: find the Greatest Common Denominator between the fractions which is, 30.
1/5 = x/30 + 1/6 = x/30
Sec: multiply the denominators with the missing values that give you the 30; multiply the missing values with the corresponding variables.
(6)(1/5) = x/30 + (5)(1/6) = x/30
(6)(1/5) = 6/30 + (5)(1/6) = 5/30
Third: combine the fractions with the same denominator.
6/30 + 5/30
= 11/30

You can always multiply any fraction by 1 and not effect it's total value.
Multiply 1/5 by 1 in the form 6/6 which gives you 6/30.
Multiply 1/6 by 1 in the form 5/5 which gives you 5/30.
now that they both have the same denominator (common denominator) you can add the numerators and get 11/30.
Since 11 is a prime number you can not reduce the fraction.
In this case the least common denominator is the product of the two denominators. The product of the denominators is always a common denominator but not necessarily the least common denominator.
Also there is no such thing as "the greatest common denominator" as mentioned in a previous answer.

the common denominator of 5 & 6 is 30.
1/5 becomes 6/30 (30/5 = 6 then 6*1 = 6)
1/6 becomes 5/30 (30/6 = 5 then 5*1 = 5)
now add 6/30 + 5/30 = 6+5=11 and the denominator stays the same.
Therefore your answer = 11/30

you find a common denominator. multiply 5*6, which gives you 30. So now you multiply the numerators 1*6 = 6. and 1*5 = 5. If you're adding you get 6/30 + 5/30 =11/30. If you're subtracting 6/30 - 5/30 = 1/30.

change denominator - what is the number that both 5 and 6 go into? 30
so multiply the first fraction, both numerator and denominator, by 6 (since 5 goes 6 times into 30): 6/30
multiply the second fraction, both numerator and denominator, by 5: 5/30
add the two: 11/30

Yes, first you find a common denominator, often by multiplying the two.
so the denominator for this is
5(6) = 30
Cross multiply.
1/6 = 1(6)=6/30
1/6 = 1(5) = 5/30
