Lots of different things! Keep in mind that being in any of the following categories does not mean that you'll have a difficult pregnancy. Most moms in the categories below do just fine, and so do their babies:
- Advanced maternal age - meaning that the woman is 35 years old or older during any part of the pregnancy.
-Extremely young mothers - women/girls age 17 and younger.
-Diabetes, high blood pressure, or other pre-existing medical conditions.
-Having multiple fetuses, either by chance or resulting from fertility treatments
-A history of having had multiple miscarriages or of having a stillbirth
-A history of difficult pregnancies
-Social factors, sometimes. At a hospital where I used to work, homeless women, women who were in abusive relationships, and women with substance abuse problems or a history of them were automatically classified as high risk.

With my last pregnancy, I was 38 years old and had Gestational Diabetes. This put me in a high risk category. I think age can put you in a high risk category as can medical conditions.

Well, I have the following:
Septated uterus
Thyroid disease
Gestational diabetes
Pre-eclampsia
Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
Was told any individual one of these could be classified as high risk complications, so all of them together are certainly high risk! lol
