Fairly typical comments, from typically uneducated 'swallowed the flag' Americans, who have little concept of what the UN was/is supposed to be.
The UN is not perfect, so who is, and that surely ends the argument about it not being perfect. It never will be, get used to it, and any machine run by humans will emulate the human condition for mistakes and a desire to have the machine serve its interests.
In this later regard, the US has many problems with the UN, in that it seriously expects the UN to bend over to everything the US wants, while the UN is supposed to be representative of all Nations.
The war on Iraq was declared unsafe by the UN, which held back from the using the proper term, illegal, but even this did not satisfy the US, who wanted sanction to go ahead and murder innocent people.
There can never be a proper UN while we have Nations who think they are better than everyone else, State racism, and where you think that s untrue, do not trainers for the American armed forces, as well as senior staff, refer to Iraq's, and all other Arab people, as rag heads, which is a derogatory and racist remark. It becomes State racism where leaders encourage others to racist and murder, as the US forces do in many invaded countries.
The UN is the United Nations, not just a pawn in the nazi designs of the US, and where you flunkies think that it is a good idea that the UN be relocated to Europe, be sure f this, practically everyone agrees with you on this.
As far as America being a real threat to democracy, it s, this is true, and while others are as dangerous a threat, this does not remove the real and true fact that America is indeed the World's worst offender when it comes to bullying.

having read all the comments so far, it is clear that the U.N. is seen with disdain and contempt by the ordinary US citizen.
If it is that bad, is there a need to have a forum, other than the U.N, to have all nations meet more regularly then the relevant presidents of all countries could manage.

Most Americans aren't even aware of the UN today. But personally, I think the UN is a joke, and we are ridiculous for keeping it here in America, where foreign delegates spit on our ground and rail against us in chambers.

It is the most worthless organization around. Just show me one of their successes in the last fifty years. They could not handle Suez, Israel, Palestine, Ethiopia, Congo, Ruanda, Burundi, Uganda, Darfur, Somalia. . . .look how the last leader and his son ripped off the oil for food program in Iraq.
Other member nations are not paying their dues and the USA funds about 40% of all expenses.
It is a Politically correct organization who's bark is more serious than its bite.
'One country one vote', countries with 1.4 billion people or 400 million have the same one vote as another with less than a million in population.
You asked if USA is committed to involvement. . . .if it was not for USA paying part of the dues, this worthless organization would have been defunct long ago.

Bush ignored the UN and would do it again if it served his agenda.
The UN is a great humanitarian idea if there were truly good leadership.
Maybe in the future, but the way I see our planet is this...humans are a violent creature, there are too many humans on the planet now all wanting the American dream of consumerism, the next major war will be a continuation of the war Bush started to control oil......unless we devolope an energy source that does not pollute our air and water.
The other alternative is Mother nature will shake us off like a dog with fleas.

This American finds the UN worthless. It spends most of its time passing resolutions against the US and Israel and awards nations with such stellar human rights records as China and Syria with seats on the Human Rights Commission.

The UN is a very inept organization and the USA spends way too much money on it. Maybe now that Kofi is gone it will improve but I wouldnt hold my breath.

Americans seem to view the UN as an obstacle to get past on their way to colonisation of the oil producing countries.

The U.N. is a platform for France to whine and posture. What have they accomplished without the use of U.S. troops? A pointless exercise in diplomacy among nations that aren't interested in diplomacy.
