Get some dry ice and place about 1 pound of it on top of each mound and cover it with a plastic yard trash bag. Use weights or nails to keep the bags from blowing away. Leave the bags there for 4 hours. As the dry ice "melts", it releases carbon dioxide gas into the mound. Because it's heavier than air, it goes down into the ground as deep as the tunnels in the colony. If you still see any activity, just do it again. This works with termites too.

In Brisbane, Australia, colonies have been effectively controlled by ground baiting with food laced with contraceptives and poisons that render the colony's Queen infertile. ( check local garden or hardware stores for the baits)
or you can get a Pangolin :)

you could go to a garden store (like home depot or lowe's) and in the garden section, you'll find some parasites just for killing red ants. these will NOT do any other kind of harm

Well I don't know if you live in a neighborhood where there is a lot of people but I'll tell you what my stepdad did to get rid of his.
He simply took some gasoline, lighter fluid would work as well. And poured some gas all over the hill that they were in, and then lit it on fire. That killed the majority of them. However if you live in an area where you have a lot of neighbors then that might not be a good idea.
Another method would be dousing the entire hill with raid and other lethal chemicals so that it will slowly poison them that way. Along with that, take pieces of meat, or even roadkill if you can find any, and douse it with Raid and leave it outside the colony. They will come out to eat it and will die from poison that way. If you don't want to touch roadkill then meat or chicken from your home will work as well.

At many stores they sell a product called Ortho home defense and it's for ants and you just spray it on and it will kill the ants. Or for a chemical free method i would just drown them or steop on them though. I don'r Recommend this because you could be bitten by the ants.
