It varies by university. US News reports the retention rate and graduation rate for the schools it ranks. Unfortunately, it is a premium feature -- so is not available on their web site unless you pay. But it is in the magazine which you can find at any book store.
They publish a few for the schools at the top of their respective lists. Here are the retention rates (Freshmen who come back for a Sophomore year) and graduation rates (Those who graduate within a set period). Note -- some freshmen could transfer and graduate elsewhere:
National Universities
------------ ----------------
Princeton University -- 98% -- 94%
Harvard University -- 97% -- 94%
National Liberal Arts Colleges
------------ --------- ------ ------------
Williams College -- 97% -- 94%
Amherst College -- 97% -- 95%
Top Regional Universities
----- -------------- ---------------
Villanova University --- 94% -- 84%
Loyola College (MD) -- 91% -- 82%
As you can see -- the rate is pretty high for the top universities and colleges as well as for the better regional universities. It drops off as quality goes down.
