To go through the background check, show 3 pieces of ID and everything else.

Should a Lie-Detector test be involved in this process now?
How about a metal evaluation?

This may not have stopped him, but would have defineitly put him on the authories radar.

The background checks need to be much more thorough, and when people are buying guns there should be limits. As each person gets a gun, he/she should be put in a database of what guns they own and how many. This would help avoid people stockpiling guns for Columbine-like missions. Granted they can still get them on the street if they know how to do that, but we are talking about what we can regulate. They should also extend the waiting period for guns, and of all types. That would aid in curbing people that get upset and go out in a flash to buy a rifle or something with a quick turn-over and go on a shooting spree. Anyone that wants a gun legitimately should be willing to go through what it takes to preserve safety for us all.

Yes, it does not take that long to buy a gun. I would say it takes even less than 20 minutes. Of course you have to buy it, so it takes money too. But all you do is provide your SS# and some identification and the guy calls a number, waits about 20 seconds and then gives you the green light. (At least that's how it works in Kansas.) Once you've passed the test and paid for your weapon you can leave with it. In all I'd say that once you know what gun you want it takes about 20 minutes until you are in public with it.

However, you have to be able to pass the background check. A friend of mine can't get a gun because his g/f had him arrested for domestic abuse. So you can't be a felon and you can't have any other sort of violent record. Most all gun shops are in favor of these sort of checks taking place because they don't want psychos on the street with a weapon they sold him. That's bad for business.

POLYGRAPHS DON'T WORK!!!!!!!!!

Even if they did how would taking one have prevented this guy from walking out of a store with a gun? You don't know if he bought them with violent intent or if he owned them prior to his decision to go on a murderous rampage. So a lie detector would not necessarily have prevented anything.

I do not oppose a waiting period at all. That seems perfectly reasonable. I would think that proof of citizenship (i.e. SS#) would be necessary for the purchase of a gun.

Finally, the two handguns he used in the shootings had their serial numbers filed off. That means that he (or the guy who sold them to him) didn't want them to be traceable. In other words, they were stolen to begin with. So, just like many criminals out there, he didn't even buy the gun at a gun store. Given that, your idea sort of falls apart.

Proof of citizenship, might be nice.
How about if an automatic wait for non-citizens?

Also a very fast purchase is an indication that the buyer doesn't care about the gun's workings. Only about owning it.
Never kicked the tires.

i think that anyone that is going to purchase a gun has to see a pyschologist for a mental evaluation befoer purchasing it. it sounds a little over the top but thats exactly what we need to do to protect innocent lives in the future.
