if the dryer will not do nothing after it shuts off then you have a bad motor....or motor is full of lint ....if dryer will restart and heat up after a little while and then quits again ....need to clean or replace motor.....the timer is the only thing on the dryer that controls the motor....once you turn the machine on it should run whether it heats or not..... if it dont the motor is bad...

take off the vent pipe from behind the machine and clean out all the years of accumulated LINT that is choking the dryer so it can't breath and properly vent itself. Causing it to overheat and shut down.

If you're lucky, you caught it in time before it burns out the safety switches or heating coil

You may have an air blockage with lint and the dryer is overheating and shuting down. When it cools, then you can restart. clean the filter and the vent line out.
