The wisdom to be open to new understandings and not the belief that you know how the world works. You must see the world laterally so that you see how different things are connected. It helps to have a desire for deeper knowledge and a willingness for that knowledge to change your conceptions and yourself.

We begin to gain knowledge from the day we are born - our whole life is a learning curve! First we learn how to walk, talk etc etc. Next comes our school years where we don't want to learn but are expected to and put into a situation where we need to learn! As you grow older, you grow wiser (or should do) and therefore you acquire more and more knowledge along life's pathway. We actually never stop learning. Academic learning needs patience, a lot of reading and persistence but most people are capable of this at some level or another. So, basically, to gain knowledge - you have to gain life experience!

First a person must gain a brain. Once the brain has been gained, knowledge, useless or otherwise, can be stored in it. Much like the hard drive on a PC. The next hard bit is getting that 'knowledge' to come out again when it's needed. You know the person's name, it's on the tip of your tongue. Not it's not, it's buried somewhere with the rest of the junk knowledge which you have stored in your brain.

I would say, you must gain access to trusted sources of accurate and unbiased factual information.
This is what a good teacher or a good school or university should offer. It is also why we have a crisis now in the news media. There are too many controlling private interests exerting influence over the reporting of "news" to the public.
Knowledge is the acquisition of understanding, and at the core of any body of knowledge or discipline there must be absolute, scrupulous honesty!

You don't have to gain anything but it is rather what you lose, there must be a reduction in the bias of the self to truly appriciated knowledge as most knowledge has nothing to do with the self.
