I was only born in 1973, but I clearly remember going to the cinema with my mother to see this film and I also remember all the hysteria surrounding it at the time. It's one of my earliest memories. What are your memories of that time?

Yes! We must be the only ones on here old enough - and I am older than you! I was born 1969!
I remeber sherbet liqorice sweets and flying saucer sweets and all those, Space hoppers, playing in the street on our bikes that you could never do now, roller boots, skateboards, Rubicks cubes, going to school, 'the Clangers' and Swap Shop and the childrens programmes, collecting Star Wars cards, probably loads of other things will come to me later

Why yes,yes I did. Was born in '75 and was a tad young at the time. Clearly remember going to the cinema to see it though, getting some star wars badges from a nearby fast food restaurant and generally being really excited about the whole thing.
Pity I feel asleep in the last half hour and woke up, slightly annoyed and demanded to go back and watch it again.

I blame that moment for a life-time of on-off Lucas worshipping. Damn him and his bearded mastery of marketing ways!!!!

Yes, the Old Mill Theater in Mountain View, California !!

I would have been 12 yrs old... and I remember it as one of the RARE movies my Dad went to see. He even went TWICE !! As an engineer he of COURSE pointed out that there were problems: no sound in space... but he still loved the story and images. Back at school a friend of mine was making VERY good comics of StarWars mixed with Star Trek, Dr. Who, and later Battlestar Galactica

I cut classes for the next two Star Wars films (to see on opening day)... and saw the later 3 movies on opening days.

Thanks for a blast from the past.

I was barely 10 years old when I saw STAR WARS at the Drive-in. I remember we got pulled over by the cops on the way because my father was speeding to make it before the film started. We made it on time, but about 20 minutes after the movie started, the fog rolled in and we could not see the screen. So we heard the dialog, but did not see about 30 minutes! Everybody was honking their horns and flashing their lights (as if the drive-in management could do something about the fog!)

Yes. My friends and I were crazy about mark hammill and we went to see it about 5 times the first couple of weeks. I think we went to see it every week after it popped up at the 1.00 theater.

I wasnt so much into sci-fi, i just loved the movie and the sequels. The one thing I do remember is going shopping at the mall right before the movie came out and I saw all these kids I knew from school and they were in line waiting for tickets and they were dressed up like Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Luke Skywalker. I thought they were seriously disturbed. I might go see a movie multiple times but you'd never catch me wearing character costumes.

Queued around the cinema with me mum; the Odeon in Middlesbrough. I was 7 and can remember it being the best experience I have ever had at the pictures. That opening sequence...
